Larry D. Hainsey, 85, of Queen, passed away Wednesday July 24, 2024 at Homewood at Martinsburg. He was born March 14, 1939, in Klahr, son of the late Melvin “Jack” and Daisy M. (Claar) Hainsey. He married Susahn Feathers on April 9, 1966 at the Queen United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his wife, a son Greg and wife Tracy, brothers Eldon and wife Jean, Michael and wife Wilma, sisters Jane Claycomb and husband Jed, and Mary Black and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Guy Black Jr. and Alan Feathers.
Larry was a member of the Lower Claar Church of the Brethren. He was a 1957 graduate of Greenfield-Kimmel High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964.
Larry retired in 1994 from Exxon, where he was a truck driver and worked at the East Freedom terminal, for 27 years.
Larry loved all outdoor activities. Almost every day of every deer season was spent hunting with his brothers and brothers in law. Their hunting range spanned from the Maryland state line to their hunting camp in Cameron County. Larry enjoyed fishing and camping at Raystown lake and in his life time he logged over 40 fishing trips to many parts of Canada. Later, he and his wife relaxed at their campsite in Bedford.
Larry had a passion for auto racing. He and his family have a racing history that spanned decades. His son Greg was always the driver. They started 40 years ago racing go karts. They had a brief stint in drag racing and ended with 22 years of fielding a dirt track stock car. The red and white 31h never hit the track without Larry being present in the pits making last minute adjustments and giving his driver some often needed advice.
Friends will be received from 2-6 P.M. on Sunday July 28, 2024 at the Leslie-Miller Funeral Home, and from 10-11 A.M. at the Lower Claar Church of the Brethren on Monday July 29, 2024.
